Registration for 2018 Citizens Academy is Closed

Interested individuals must apply to attend Citizens Academy and pass a background check. Chosen participants must also commit to attending all 10 weeks.

Who: Adults ages 18+ who live or work in Burnsville

When: Thursday evenings for 10 weeks, Sept. 13 - Nov. 15 from 6 - 9 p.m.

Where: Burnsville City Hall, 100 Civic Center Parkway

Cost: FREE

Burnsville Police Department Offers Citizens Academy for Members of the Community to:

  • Take a 10-week course, taught by Burnsville Police Officers, to become familiar with police work and how the community can help prevent crime.

Citizens Academy training

Class Topics

  • History of and tour the police department
  • Review common police calls/ laws of arrest/ handcuffing procedures
  • Functions of patrol, investigations, SWAT, physical evidence team, domestic abuse response team, negotiators, bike patrol traffic and K-9 units
  • Traffic stops/DWI demonstration
  • Officer survival, use of force
  • Student involved scenarios, a Taser demonstration and shooting in an indoor range

Participants are asked to make a commitment to attend each session.
