Oak Savanna Informational Meeting

Wednesday, August 9

Members of the public are invited to an informational meeting to discuss a new oak savanna/oak woodland restoration project at Terrace Oaks Park in Burnsville. This project is dependent on State grant funding, for which the City will be applying in September. If funded, work on the restoration project would begin in 2018. The informational meeting will cover the project timeline, objectives and tasks. The meeting will include a 15- to 20-minute presentation on the project followed by time for questions.

Project Overview
The proposed project area is 25 acres, and is located on the northcentral part of Terrace Oaks Park (see map below). The project area does not border homes, and would not have a direct impact on private property bordering the park. Minor trail disruptions in the project area would be expected, including a temporary trail closure of one trail section for a period of 2 to 3 weeks during the winter.

If funded, this restoration will focus on removing Common Buckthorn, an invasive shrub species that impacts the growth and repopulation of native trees. It will also focus on canopy thinning of select tree species to help restore and encourage the growth of oak trees at Terrace Oaks Park.

The project would be conducted in two phases, with buckthorn removal and canopy thinning occurring in Phase 1, and Phase 2 including follow-up buckthorn control and native wildflower seeding.

If you would like to attend the informational session – or for more information – contact Natural Resources Specialist Caleb Ashling at or 952-895-4543.
