Veteran's Preference

The City of Burnsville awards preference points to qualified veterans, and spouses of deceased or disabled veterans, subject to the provisions of applicable Minnesota Statute.

To qualify for Veteran's Preference, the veteran must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or resident alien
  • Have received a discharge under honorable conditions from any branch of the U.S. Armed forces; and have either
    • Served on active duty for 181 consecutive days or more; or
    • Have been discharged by reason of service connected disability; or
    • Have completed the minimum active duty requirement of federal law, as defined by CFR title 38, section 3.12a; i.e., having fulfilled the full period for which a person was called or ordered to active duty by the United States President; or
    • Have certified service and verification of “veteran status” granted under U.S. PL 95-202

To claim Veteran's Preference, applicants must:

  1. Complete the Election of Veteran’s Preference portion on the application.
  2. Include a copy of documentation (see steps below).
  3. Meet minimum qualifications (above).

Document Submission
Copies of documentation must be provided by the posting's closing date. Documents may be submitted as follows:

  • Preferred Method of Submission
    • Scan and upload a copy of your document(s) and attach to your application. (Once scanned, save your document as a PDF file, then upload and attach it to your application).
  • Optional Method of Submission
    • Mail a hard copy to City of Burnsville, 100 Civic Center Parkway, Burnsville, MN 55337    

Documentation Requirements
Veteran:
  • A copy of the Veteran's Form DD-214 (or DD-215)

Disabled Veteran:
  • A copy of the Veteran's Form DD-214 (or DD-215); and
  • A copy of form FL21-802 (or an equivalent letter from a Service Retirement Board)

Spouse of Disabled Veteran:
  • A copy of the Veteran's Form DD-214 (or DD-215); and
  • A copy of your marriage certificate; and
  • A copy of form FL21-802 (or an equivalent letter from a Service Retirement Board)

Spouse of a Deceased Veteran:
  • A copy of the Veteran's Form DD-214 (or DD-215) showing years of service and type of discharge; and
  • A copy of your marriage certificate; and
  • A copy of the veteran's death certificate
Note: Spouses are ineligible to receive points if they have remarried or were divorced from the veteran.
